just like life.

i met up with the gang yesterday for a morning hike. after three weeks without exercise, this was a great way to jump back in. the mau'umae trail is a ridgeline trail that starts right on the mau'umae ridge at the top of wilhelmina rise. typical of a ridge hike, this trail is a series of narrow, rocky ascents and descents. even as a novice hiker, i thought this trail was fairly simple. however, we only hiked an hour in, and i read that the end has more complex areas. sunny or rainy conditions would certainly heighten the challenge. still, the ups and downs and distance were enough to give me a good sweat. as one of the guys was [jokingly] grumbling about the ups and downs, another chimed in and compared it to life's ups and downs. guys can be so deep sometimes.

these first two photos are from a random google search.
the start of the trail.
looking ahead...
the trail is very narrow. in rainy conditions, it's not advised to go around puddles as the trail literally drops off in certain areas. you spend most of the time looking down, watching your step, that you miss out on the scenery.
one rest stop...the view of palolo valley behind me.
looking back...
some of the rocky areas.

do you like to hike? what's your favorite way to get exercise?

Oh wow, just gorgeous! I'm not much of a hiker, but I'm trying to walk as much as possible ( mornings I walk my girl to school and after dinner we hit the college campus across the street). It's nice!

what an incredible hike? If that didn't give you a work out I don't know what would. I love hiking....especially in those areas. Too remote...no good. Looks like you had fun!

I absolutely loooove hiking. When I still had my car and could actually get places, I would go off on little hiking adventures on my own often enough. That ridge trail looks like it'd be awesome to do.

so fun! I do like to hike, but there are not too many amazing trails like yours around here (burbs of chicago) ;)
I love to walk or run around the neighborhood. Cheep, easy, and great exercise ;)

This scenery is gorgeous...looks like perfect setting and weather for a hike!!! You motivate me to get out in the warmer weather and get some exercise...I used to be crazy good in shape because of dancing all the time, but since I got married and started working two jobs...well, I've gained 7 lbs and lost all my muscle and tone :P

Do you enjoy biking? Seems like good biking weather lately too.

Do you ever just look around (pinch yourself) and say, God I'm so lucky to live here? You live in paradise.

Wow this looks absolutely amazing!! The scenery is beautiful and the hike seems invigorating. I would like to hike a lot more. I do love to play tennis (though I'm not good at all), rollerblade, ice skate, and ride bikes. I'm really not hardcore at exercise in the slightest but would love to make it more part of my life!

Okay, it's official. I need to move to Hawaii and be your neighbor so that you can motivate me to work out more. ;) I haven't really done any hiking. Lately, the only exercise I can get is my morning run . . . when I can make myself wake up to do it! lol It's been tough getting back into the swing of things. Tomorrow... Tomorrow it's happening for SURE!

Hiking is super fun, but the bugs keep me away. I'm more of an air-conditioned gal! :) Glad that you had a great time.

Looks like a beautiful trail. I so love to hike especially on natural trails than paved ones. The more exotic the better. I also like to be in the front. I hate looking at someone's back in skinny trails. Kind of takes away from that 'I am out in nature' feel for me.
We are anxiously waiting for our kids to be old enough to hike on foot to take on family hikes.
What age were you able to do that with your kids since yours are older?

What a gorgeous view! If I lived in CA or HI I would be in better shape....Becks I don't know what it is but after I turned 30 last year the weight is not the same. I walk every, I don't own a car and run errands by walking so I guess that's my exercise...

YAY! I'm going to do this this weekend, IF it's not raining. At least our weather is getting better, right? LOL
